On 16th June, just a few days preceding the National Pollinator Week, we launched Orchards in the Community Project with a virtual webinar.
Over 350 participants joined us on-line and we were overwhelmed by the involvement of the audience. It was amazing to see how many companies and individuals are interested in our DCs for Bees - Orchards in the Community initiative.
Joining us on the webinar were Dr Una Fitzpatrick, of the National Biodiversity Data Centre, who spoke about the National Pollinator Plan and the role that orchards can play in helping protect and save our pollinators. Katie Mills from Schneider Electric, who have pledged 200 Orchards as part of the campaign, spoke about why biodiversity is important for organisations and the risk for companies if they don't take action and Peter Dowdall, the Irish Gardner at RTE, joined us to speak about what each of us can do in our own space to encourage biodiversity and how orchards can help create pollinator corridors all over Ireland.
Currently over 1200 mixed fruit orchards have been pledged by companies and organisations all over the country. Massive thanks goes to all pledgers and Host in Ireland partners without whom this amazing initiative would not be possible.
